Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, Pura Ulun Danu Beratan or Bratan Pura Merupaka is a large water temple and temple in Bali - the other main water temple being Pura Ulun Danu Batur.

This temple complex is located on the northwestern edge of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul, Tabanan Regency. Water temples cover the entire area in the watershed; on the downstream bank there are many small water temples specific to each irrigation association (subak).

This temple is actually used for offering ceremonies to Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes and rivers. Lake Bratan is one of the important lakes in terms of irrigation.

Lake Bratan is known as a "holy mountain" lake, this area is very fertile, located at an altitude of 1,200 meters, and has a very cold climate. Batur Temple or Ulun Danu Temple was first founded in the 17th century. This temple is dedicated to the god Vishnu and to the lake goddess Dewi Danu.

Ulun Danu Bratan Temple complex
Ulun Danu Beratan Temple has four temple complexes, namely Lingga Petan Temple, Pelinggih Dewa Shiva; Penataran Puncak Mangu Temple, Shrine of Lord Vishnu; Terate Bang Temple, Temple of the God Brahma; Pura dalem Purwa, Pelinggih Dewi Danu, the goddess of water, rivers and lakes who is also known as the goddess of fertility.

History
Until now, no definite source has been found regarding the year the Ulun Danu Temple was founded. The only source that can be found is based on Lontar Babad Mengwi.

It is explained in the Mengwi chronicle that before establishing Taman Ayun Temple, the founder of the Mengwi Kingdom, I Gusti Agung Putu, had built the temple on the edge of Lake Beratan.

It is not specifically stated when Ulun Danu Temple was founded. Lontar only mentions that Taman Ayun Temple was founded on the Anggara Kliwon Mendangsia day of the Saka Sad Bhuta Yaksa Dewa year, or 1556 Saka (1634 AD). Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the founding of Ulun Danu Temple was carried out before 1556 Saka.

To visit the temple in the middle of the lake, we have to use a boat that is available on the edge of the lake. Apart from visiting the main temple in the middle of the lake, we can visit other temple buildings because like temples in Bali in general, Ulun Danu Temple is divided into three parts; outer courtyard, middle and inner courtyard.Architecture

Outer Courtyard (Penataran Agung Temple)
In this section we will find Candi Bentar which is the entrance to the outer courtyard. Here we will find a sarcophagus and an upright stone to the left of the outer courtyard.

Central Courtyard (Pura Dalem Purwa)
There is no wall separating the outer courtyard and the central courtyard, but rather a boundary stone structure on which there are several statues.

In the central courtyard we will find the Kori Agung Stupa which is decorated with sapta-nsi with the entrance stairs decorated with elephant statues. Peering into the niche of the stupa we will find a statue of a Bhiksu, while the walls of the stupa are decorated with swastikas as a symbol of the sun and eternity.

Inner Courtyard (Beiji Park Temple)
To reach the inner courtyard we have to go through three steps flanked by two pairs of guard statues. In the inner courtyard we will find several buildings; Prasada Meru Overlapping Eleven. This building is dedicated to Shiva and Parvati's magic.
